Excerpt from Knapp "XV.
“I know something about their grammar now- but this takes some time, Sir. I must have more encounters, to get the feeling of their tongue.”- 830 said.
‘Right. I’ll go to sleep now, you must find a nice place- a secure place- where to pass the night.”- Shilar said.
“Don’t you worry, Sir. I’ll take the night watch this time, and I’ll move the spaceship if it’s necessary.”- 830 said, saluting.
Shilar went to his cabin, takes a shower and goes to bed- he was feeling tired and lonesome.
In the morning, after his coffee and biscuits, Shilar went to the main cabin, where AB 830 was standing in attention.
“Good day ! I see we are at the same spot- what happens with my order to find a secure place?’- Shilar asked.
‘I find it secure in here, Sir. No need to move the spaceship, if you are going to keep an eye on those rats.”- AB 830 said without moving from his place, near the main console.
‘I see some commotion down there- what are they doing?”- Shilar asked, as the holographic monitor was set on the main entrance to the caves.
“Some procession or other, sir. Do you want enhancement of the situation?”- AB 830 asked him.
“Yes, by all means. Let’s see what are they performing.”- Shilar said, looking in an attentive way. The procession has several wounded rats, and some warriors were around the carts who had them on stretchers- they walked to a hill, where stone circles were set from old; once they lay the injured on the encircled ring, they begin to replenish the whole place with bushes and rags, until they were all almost covered with it; from the cave appears several torch bearers, and when at the site, they throw the torches inside and the bushes catches fire together with the rags and shavings, and soon the prisoners were set in the middle of a little inferno.
“Remarkable way to dispose of the severed injured men; a little too harsh for my taste.”- Shilar said.
“Their medical science must be in the beginnings, Sir.”- AB 830 said.
“Certainly so. “- Shilar said, while the smoke ascended in the air; the people was only looking until there was nothing to see; the stretchers and their occupants were gone in smoke after some three hours of brim and fire.
Shilar moves the spaceship to see how they tend the land; they had heards of Coelophysis and used the Paracephalopus just to obtain the eggs and butchered them when old; Shilar stayed hovering around for a week, and the video cameras takes films of it all.
AB 830 descended five times to try to learn the language- he finds an old rat-like creature on a hill, tending a heard of Polacanthus; the rat-man was very helpful and because of it, the Synthetic person could learn the language, ask a few questions, and told Shilar all about them- of course, seen by the mind of a heardsman.
“Sir: they are commanded by three different queens, that lies inside the cave; they are producing hundred of new rats every two months; the number of females inside the cave is around the two thousands- one thing they don’t need to be worried about its extinction- they attack the Saurian people just because they were wanting to have that city for their own.”- AB 830 said.
“Well, not unlike some mammals from Earth and Knapp.”- Shilar replied.
“They didn’t have religions- they think they came from death and goes unto death after a brief living- like ants, insects, dinosaurs and what not.”- AB 830 said.
“Well, guess they are smarter than millions of primates I know of.”- Shilar said, smiling.
