“I have seen something odd about 20 years ago at least 7 of us were standing in a yard near Morton Park in Emerald Central Queensland it was still day light , about 5pm-5-30pm we saw this big bright light coming across Morton Park quite low to the ground as it got closer to us it gained height and settled above us for some time finally a flame shot out of the object and it disappeared. We believed the object to to go upwards we also waited this time to see if anyone saw anything no one reported anything so we just kept quite.” Myra Stanton

Karen Sheffield, a Qld government social worker was in a government vehicle driven by Mark Poulson, a Qld government social worker in the area for 25 years & at the time of the incident was & still is the Youth worker for the Normanton to Boulia area. They were driving from Dajarra to the Gregory River, south of Mt Isa visiting Aboriginal communities and had several Aboriginal children in the back of the utility. At 3 pm driving under clear sunny skies they observed ahead of them a pink object several kms in front of them that they could not identify. As they drew closer they realised that they were approaching a vast stationary pink bubble possibly 10 kms wide & a km high, the edges of the giant bubble were distinct but blurry. It sat on the desert with the blue sky surrounding it. They could not understand what it was that they were approaching until the Aboriginal children began excitedly yelling “Min Min Light, Min Min Light” and then Mark Poulson became very excited & stated that he had heard about the giant pink Min Min Light from others that had observed it over a 25 year period but had never seen it and stated that “he couldn’t believe he was lucky enough to finally see it.

It spread right across the road with a distinct but blurry edge as if it was fog and they drove right into it, stopped the car, got out and wandered around completely bathed in the hot pink light. They were euphoric & all of them sang and danced around for a considerable period of time. Eventually the returned to the car & drove through it & out the other side. Travelling at 100 kms an hour it took about 5 minutes to drive through that portion of the bubble of light that covered the road. The pink bubble of light had nothing to do with sunset which took place at 8 pm, 5 hours later. The pink bubble of light was a distinct phenomena that remained for the entire time that it took to travel to it, through it and away from it. They had no explanation for its existence. Gary Opit

“Two very bright Orange Lights much brighter than the brightest star in the sky, they looked to me to be the size of an average house lightbulb, they were moving east to west at about 45 degrees about the horizon.We are sure they were not saterlites or shooting stars.

The first light appeared approximately 9pm the second less then 5 minutes after.The two lights followed the same path moving fairly quickly,the lights were constant never changing which ever direction they were viewed.When the first light appeared my husband was out side and he came in to get his glasses he said that there was a strange bright orange light in the sky first he thought it was a small plane but there was no sound or flashing lights. There was five people at our home at the time and four of us saw the first light as the other person was on the telephone when he finished his call he came out just in time to see the last of the first orange light. You can imagine our surprise when we saw the second one coming my Aunt spotted the second one and she said look at that bright light.We all agreed that not one of us had ever seen anything like this before our ages range from 48 years to 71 years of age.

On the 18th December at the Olympic Park Units at Homebush at around 10:30 pm, Simon was sitting with a friend on his friends balcony. It was a clear night and two objects appeared, they seemed to be heading north. These orange light objects were travelling at jet speed, performing zigzag manoeuvrers with each other, darting in and out. They looked as if they were around 35 degree above the horizon. No noise was apparent and their orange appearance remained constant. The whole event took 5 to 7 seconds according to the reportee and they were both of equal size, that being the size of a quarter of a five cent piece from the witnesses perspective. No light trail etc was apparent from either object leading up to or during the manoeuvrers. The orange lights eventually disappeared from view separately. Karen Barden AUFORN NSW

It reminded Karen Sheffield of an earlier experience that she had with a similar but orange bubble of light that she drove into on the 23rd December 1999 on her way from Cloncurry to Boulia to attend a christmas party at the Boulia hotel in the mid afternoon. She had been bathed in orange light as she drove through it & once again she felt euphoric.

She hadn’t been aware of the orange light until she drove into it, then she stopped & was amazed that everything was bright orange. She told the other party attendees, mostly government workers when she arrived at the hotel but they didn’t seem to take much notice of what she had to say. Gary Opit

Karen & David Sheffield at Cloncurry drove out to the water supply dam at Cloncurry at night, parked in the parking area looking over the water, though nothing was visible in the inky blackness.

Suddenly what looked like a campfire lit up in front of them & David who had not been to the site before said “let’s go over & say hello to the campers”, to which Karen replied “there can be no campers where that fire is burning because it is in the middle of the dam”. David replied “it cannot be over the water because there is no reflection in the water.” Karen countered that if it was a campfire why is it not illuminating the surrounding bushes, trees, people, etc.” They called out anyway but there was no reply & the fire flickered out then lit up again eventually to fade. They visited the next day & sure enough they estimated that the fire-like object was directly above the water surface Previously I had talked to a couple of people who had experienced the light though the records are buried away in my files but the first was from a tour operator driving a bus at night & who observed a light as if from some vehicle approaching the road they were driving on coming at right angles to the left, crossed the road a short distance ahead & continued away to the left.

The driver naturally thought that he was approaching an intersection & that a vehicle of some sort had crossed it on a road that cut across the main road that he was on but as he approached the locality he was surprised to find nothing but undistubed bushland with no tracks or road & so concluded that he had observed a Min Min light. The second report was from 2 people camped on the side of a waterway & observed what appeared to be someone approaching the water on the other side of the waterway with a keroscene lantern & which then moved about a metre high along the water’s edge.

The campers yelled out a friendly greeting & were surprised to receive no answer & then suddenly realised that there was no reflection on the water or on the bushes from the light & realised that it was some bizzare light phenomenon that then perfectly retraced its path & vanished. Gary Opit

On Tuesday night (20.01.04) I was sitting on the sofa watching television when I heard a lady call up to 3AW citing that she saw a brilliant white object to the western side of the sky, which got brighter and then faded until it disappeared then started yet again increasing in brightness. My friend and I shot out of the front door into the street and fixed our eyes on the western hemisphere of the sky. There it was before our eyes! It looked like a bright star low on the horizon, and I believe it was stationary. It was mildly flickering, more dramatically than the flicker of stars. It faded until invisible, then increased in brightness yet again. The cycle continued. It wasn’t quite a perfect sphere. It looked elongated (UP-DOWN) and it appeared to possess a minute tail. We were amazed by the site, but after staring at the magnificent object for some time we made our way back into the house. Three hours later, we went outside again and looked into the sky - it was nowhere to be seen.

I have some video footage of it as well as three digital photographs. We also left 3AW a message explaining to them what we saw. Michael Goldberg

I watched a light go behind a cloud but it never came out the other side. It just vanished. I did not hear any noises. I thought it might be a plane but as I said it did not come out of the cloud. I was watching for an hour afterwards but it did not return or leave the cloud. I did not check with the airport if they had any planes in that area at that time of night. Wayne Wells

25.01.04 CARNARVON GORGE, QLD 1930hrs (NL)

The witness has seen spheres flying low over the gorge for three weeks and was able to film some activity with their handy cam on January 25, 2004, at 7:30 PM. The object flew slowly west until dispersing over the mountains. There was no engine noise when the object was hovering.

The observer continued to drive, and half an hour later saw a similar object moving up on the left side, again stopped to film, and this vehicle /object started to move away. The observer returned home 2-3hrs later and saw a bright light in the sky changing color, and got video footage of it changing colors. The next night he saw more than one spread out across sky.

He has been witnessing this for three weeks now with little change. Sometimes they move around, some stay in same spot. He caught one last night giving off all colors from the down side of craft, then the light pulled in and changed to the up side of the craft.

He has tried to film stars on the camcorder, but it won’t pick them up. When directed at these objects it picks them up. One light is just to the right of Orion.

JAN/FEB 04 MELBOURNE (MOOROOLBARK), VIC MID AFTERNOON (DO)

In either January or February 2004, I was sitting on a park bench near a playground (next door to the community centre) in Mooroolbark around mid-afternoon, when I heard the sound of a light aircraft. I looked up and to my left (towards the west) and saw a Cessna type aircraft flying at what seemed to be a low altitude (elevation maybe 25 degrees), heading towards the south. I could not make out any features of the aircraft beyond it’s shape, and it seemed to be in silhouette or as if it was painted entirely in black. From my point of observation, the aircraft was at least 200 metres away (or alternatively, no smaller than a five cent coin). A few seconds after coming into sight it tipped it’s wings &Mac246; tilted left and right once &Mac246; which seemed to me that either the pilot was in trouble or this was the pilot “waving” to someone on the ground. In any case the aircraft continued to fly, and turning to the left perhaps only a few hundreds metres onwards, heading east. Then after about one minute it had turned north, flying virtually overhead and to my right eventually disappearing over some houses. Despite being able to look at the fuselage of the aircraft in full view, I could still not make out any of it’s features, as if it was in silhouette (the sky was overcast at the time so this may have been a factor). There were a number of other people nearby, at least one family and another woman who was passing by. No one seemed to pay any notice to the aircraft. The entire sighting took no more than five minutes, or the period the aircraft was in view. Keith McLean

Mr X and his wife were quite shaken up on Sunday Night 15th Feb 04 as at about 7.46pm at Burleigh Heads, they saw a fire ball travelling from North to South. It changed shape, and travelled right over their heads, they were going to run as they thought it was coming straight for them. As it reached over their heads it made a hissing sound “like gas leaking” said Mr X. Mr X took some photo’s but we have to take in to consideration that his hands were shaking when he took the photo’s using a digital camera.

This morning I was on the way to work and I spotted a very large object falling from the sky. I was about 40kl out of town heading west and the object was travelling east to northeast.

The object was very large with a silvery white front and a large fire trail coming off the back, it was in clear view for at least 10 seconds and others here viewed the same object. I have seen falling stars and the morning and evening stars and this object was the biggest thing I have ever seen coming out of the sky and I would like to know what it was as there must be some body on this planet that know of all of the things fall to earth. On Monday the 1st March at around 3pm the reportee was leaving his homestead when he noticed an object moving down the gully in the air. At the top of the gully there are communication towers and at the bottom there is flat ground and a small dam on the property. The reportee states it was a clear day and there was virtually no wind. The object was only a couple of hundred metres away from the reportee and it came to a dead stop for about 10-15 seconds at the bottom of the gully, 30-40 metres off the ground. The reportee states that the object had dark red and orange lights that were pulsating. After around 10-15 seconds it cruised off, moving off in northerly direction over the top of the mountains and then changed direction again travelling North-West.

Later on the reportee rang the Bureau of Meteriology since he has found a crashed weather balloon before, but they had nothing in the area during that time and the description did not fit. The shape of the object was difficult to determine, he thought at first it may have been an ultra-light, but soon discarded that theory due to the orange and red pulsating light display. On the 12th March at Maraylya, NSW at around 9 pm, the reportee had noticed a light in the distance, along with a few other people at a social event. She did not think anything much about it and thought it was probably someone in the distance using a spotlight. She left the event at around 10:30 pm to return home. As she was driving home to Maroota she noticed a large bright light and in the centre a dark circle. The reportee states that the object ended up at about 50 metres above her car and was at least half the size of her own car i.e Hyundai Excel. Apparently a elongated beam was coming out from the object towards the ground, however the beam itself did not seem to be eluminating her car. After around 15 minutes or so, the object starting darting about, darting across backwards and forwards and looked graceful when performing these manoeuvrers. The reportee was driving slower than usual during this event, since she was watching the object through the front window and had strain to look high up to see it. Once she had arrived at Maroota, the object continued its journey. The total drive home took around 30 minutes.

The reportee later rang the RAAF who stated they had nothing in the area, but told her they had received a number of calls about the same phenomina. Calls came from Maraylya, Pitt Town and Catai. Karen Barden AUFORN NSW

About 9.30pm on Wedensday March 17th Robert was outside with his wife and brother-in-law at Kemps Creek. He told me that they were disturbed to see a bright orange coloured light in the sky. Robert said ‘It was so damned bright, it wasn’t an airplane, we wondered what it was so I went and got my binoculars.” When he viewed it through his binoculars, he could see it was a round ball of yellowish light, like a fire, with red dots of light around the outside, like jets.

They were disturbed because of all the terrorist trouble at the moment, they thought at first it could have been a rocket missile of some sort. When they first saw it, it was as big as a 50 cent coin held at arms length, they watched it for approximately 3 minutes until they couldnt see it anymore. While they were watching it an aircraft crossed the sky. Robert said compared to the aircraft this thing was huge, much higher in altitude, about 70 degrees above the horizon and much bigger. It was travelling north to south very fast and still took about 3 minutes to disappear.

After I interviewed Robert I spoke again to Kellie about her sighting on the Thursday March 18th. Apparently Kellie first tried to photograph the object with a digital camera. Through the view finder she could see the moon and the stars but could not pick up the object, even though she could still see it with the naked eye. She then changed cameras and snapped it with an old camera. By this time it was a dot in the sky but she could see it in the view finder and zoomed it in. Larraine Cilia UFOSWS

30.03.04 MELBOURNE (MOOROOLBARK), VIC 1905hrs (CE1)

On the 30th of March 2004 at 7:05 pm I was coming out of the public library branch in Mooroolbark, and as I looked across the road to a double storey group of units I noticed in the sky behind them what looked like a blob of white light in the western night sky. Upon seeing this I stopped and look at it for about a minute. It’s plasma like quality flickered and grew in size as I watched it. I then decided to walk on, my back being to the light. I stopped again a few seconds later and looked back and it was still in the same position and at about the same intensity of light. I walked on a few seconds more and stopped at an intersection. I continued looking at the object, which did not appear to move at all, beyond it’s fluctuations. At one point the light stretched out and flattened out to form an elongated strip of light, curved at each end (a profile of a disk?....). Throughout the sighting I tried some telepathy in case this object or luminence was of the non-worldly variety, and it seemed to repond to a point: from my Ob. Pt. it do not move across the sky (I am not sure if this increase/decrease in brightness was movement towards or from me, or just “radiation”); when I suggested that I would report my sighting, at the same moment the light reduced to a small white dot.

My observation lasted five minutes, after which I decided to continue home. I didn’t see the object again. There were clouds in the sky, but they didn’t seem to obscure the object, and stars were clearly visible in swathes of night sky. The moon was clearly visible to the north, and large clouds were obscuring it gradually, with other cloud masses seen to the west. Between 8 pm and 8:30 pm I rang Mooroolbark police station to enquire if the police helicopter had been in the area. I asked the officer who picked up the phone “Was the police helicopter in the Croydon/Mooroolbark area around 7 pm?”, and he responded that based on the fact they had heard nothing on the police radio the helicopter had not been in that area. Impossible - Yet It Happened! was originally published in hardcover in 1947 in Chicago by Cloud. Inc. under the title Forgotten Mysteries and reprinted in hardcover in the same year by Grosset & Dunlap. It was reprinted again in 1956 in a hardcover edition by Citadel Press. This retitled 1962 Ace Books edition marked its first appearance in paperback.

About The Author:
Richard DeWitt Miller (January 22, 1910 – June 3, 1958) was an American writer of science fiction and Forteana. His first science-fiction publication was "The Shapes" which appeared in Astounding Science Fiction in 1936. His non-fiction books include You Do Take It With You (1936) (a book about Fortean phenomena) as well as The Mastery of the Master (1944), Impossible - Yet It Happened (also known as Forgotten Mysteries: True Stories Of The Supernatural, 1947), Stranger Than Life (1955), You Do Take It with You: An Adventure Into The Vaster Reality (1955), and Reincarnation: The Whole Startling Story (1956). Miller wrote one science-fiction novel which was first published in 1938 by Astounding Science Fiction under the title "The Master Shall Not Die" with no collaborator; it was not published in book form until 1956 when it was published by Ace Books in their dos-à-dos format Ace Doubles under the title The Man Who Lived Forever with co-author Anna Hunger. The book was bound back-to-back with Jerry Sohl's The Mars Monopoly. Miller also authored a fantasy work entitled The Loose Board In The Floor (1951).

The author, whom it turns out was a bit of a real-life con artist (see the biography below), would probably be delighted to know that his book is still fooling gullible folks 108 years later.

It's a complete cover-to-cover Internet Archive scan in .cbr, .pdf, and EPUB formats of the 1908 Forbes and Company hardcover First Edition of The Smoky God Or A Voyage To The Inner World by Willis George Emerson (1856-1918) with illustrations by J. A. Williams.

It was scanned by the Internet Archive from a copy in the Glenn Negley Collection of Utopian Literature in the library of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

I created both .cbr and .pdf versions from the original .jp2 files. I made only one change to the original color scan, removing and replacing an Internet Archive logo page. The scan includes scans of the original front and back covers of the book's pictorial cloth binding.

I've also posted the Project Gutenberg EPUB version of the book, which unfortunately doesn't include the color illustrations by J. A. Williams.

The Smoky God Or A Voyage To The Inner World is a novel by Willis George Emerson which is presented as a true account relating the narrative of Olaf Jansen, an aged Norwegian sailor compelled before he dies to tell the story of how in 1829 he found a passageway near the North Pole to the center of the earth and discovered a world peopled with 12 foot tall giants.

This novel is an early example of an underground civilization in which the main character spent two years living with the inhabitants in a network of subterranean colonies. A smoky central sun lighted the world. Their capital city was believed to be the original Garden of Eden.

It was originally published as a four-part serial in the National Magazine from December 1907 to March 1908 (the magazine serialization was discovered in the course of my research and isn't mentioned in any online article about the author or the book). It was first published in book form in hardcover in 1908 by Forbes and Company. The hardcover edition included all but one of the illustrations by J. A. Williams from the magazine serialization, a scene of the "author" speaking with Olaf Jansen. I've included that "lost" magazine illustration at the end of the file.

The Smoky God is included in both editions of Everett F. Bleiler's "Checklist Of Fantastic Literature" and in his Science-Fiction: The Early Years, where he dismisses the novel as having "no literary merit."

"When the stirring story, "The Smoky God," by Willis George Emerson, was appearing in the NATIONAL  MAGAZINE, scarcely a day passed without our  receiv­ing interesting letters of inquiry from some of our readers.

The unique plot of this tale makes it one of the great books of the year. The introduction is so human that the reader is im­mersed in scientific discussion and considera­tion of deep problems before he is aware of it; every page gleams with interest, and the history of the trip to the under world is han­dled boldly and with a rare grip which com­pels the reader to believe that he is hearing of facts rather than fancies.

The story is practically the diary of Olaf Jansen, and tells of his strange theory of another world within the crust of our visible globe of every-day knowledge. How he found this mysterious world and what oc­curred while there makes a tale of rare interest. To tell too much of the plot would break the spell for those who have not read the book; suffice it to say that it equals Mr. Emerson's other  works.

Those who know something  of Mr. Emerson's life history do not wonder at the scope and force of his books; a farmer boy from the prairies of Iowa, his experience has touched almost every phase of American life, and he is singularly well equipped for the writing of realistic novels, dealing with national scenery and American heroes and heroines. Mr. Emerson is certainly to be congratulated on his success as a writer."

Fictional reconciliation of hollow-earth theories with eclectic Fundamentalism. * California, book present; Scandinavia northwards, c. 1830. * The frame narrator becomes acquainted with Olaf Jansen, a very old Norwegian, who on his deathbed entrusts him with manuscripts. * In 1829 Jansen and his father, on a small fishing vessel, were blown far north by a storm. Their situation at first seemed desperate, but as they moved farther and farther north, they observed that the climate became milder. Soon they saw a second sun that was sometimes a reddish ball and sometimes a luminous misty body. Unknowingly they had crossed the rim of Symmes's Hole and were inside the earth, where, as they proceeded "south" they came upon gigantic life forms, including men twelve feet and more tall. The capital of the giants is called Eden, and from it stream the four rivers of the Biblical Eden. * The natives of the inner world, whose language is much like
Sanskrit, were more advanced scientifically than the outside world, with monorail trains, electricity, and other matters. He learned his lesson, however, and for the rest of his life remained silent about the inner world. * Of no literary merit. The "science" involved is based mostly on Paradise Found, or the Cradle of the Human Race at the North Pole, by William Warren, a book that argued for a warm polar depression, not an inner world. At the time Emerson wrote there was still a strong belief among cranks that warm lands would be found at the poles, and Emerson cites many travellers' accounts that seem to support this view."

""The Smoky God", an entertaining adventure, is also an essential text for all interested in the Hollow Earth theory. Most modern takes on this unique theory of the occult/paranormal come from Emerson's recounting of one Olaf Jansen, a Norwegian sailor who, on his deathbed, relates his incredible (albeit accidental) ocean odyssey with his father as they sail through an opening into the earth's interior and encounter the highly advanced inhabitants of Agharta.

The book describes their adventures amongst the inhabitants, with whom they stayed for two years before returning to the surface and enduring tragedy.

An entertaining story regardless of what one believes, I personally find Jansen's cruel fortune of being sent to an insane asylum for telling his story more than somewhat tragic. True, this story is incredible, but not more so than most. Olaf Jansen isn't the only person to speak of Agharta, just the only person to have ever supposedly visited such a kingdom, seen it with his own eyes, and returned to tell the tale.

The utopia-like kingdom of Agharta is a motif that appears in most ancient myths: Shangri-La, the Valhalla of Norse mythology, the kingdom of Belovodia in Siberian shamanism(see "Entering the Circle" by Olga Kharitidi), and Shambhalla of Tibet. In "The Smoky God ", Shambhalla is described as the capital of Agharta, where Olaf Jansen and his father meet with the ruler of the inner realm.

I would have appreciated more elaborate descriptions of the Aghartans, their customs, language(described as similar to Sanskrit), and especially their history. How old is this civilization in relation to ours? Then again the guy WAS on his deathbed, you can't expect him to remember everything.

It would certainly be comforting to believe, in a world of constant change and strife, an unchanging land exists where people have moved past most of the problems that plague us. They could serve as an example, as a hope that we, too, could eventually reach such heights ourselves.

Regardless of belief or interpretation, if you like a good story and a daring adventure, "The Smoky God" won't leave you disappointed."

About The Author:
Willis George Emerson (May 28, 1856–December 11, 1918) was born in Blakesburg, Monroe County, Iowa. He was a novelist, screenwriter, Chicago newspaperman, banker, lawyer, politician, political operative, developer, promoter, swindler, and con man.

Educated at Knox College, Illinois and Northern Ohio University, Emerson was admitted to the bar in 1886. He lived briefly in Kansas, Utah, and Wyoming, before settling in southern California in 1904. During that time he was employed in banking and as a town planner. He was known as an orator, political writer, and an expert on “sound money.” He became involved in politics and campaigned on behalf of the Republican Party in both the 1888 and 1900 elections. He formed the North American Copper Company in Wyoming and founded the town of Encampment, Wyoming in 1897, where he resided until his move to California.

Besides writing extensively for the magazines on diverse subjects, he was author of a fair number of novels beginning in the 1890s, many of which had Western settings. In 1908, he published The Smoky God, Or, A Voyage To The Inner World, in which he purports to relate the adventures of a Norwegian, Olaf Jansen, in the discovery of a land beyond the North Pole. The book was a success and many people believed the story to be true. Among his other better-known novels are The Builders (1906), The Treasure Of Hidden Valley (1915), The Man Who Discovered Himself (1919), A Vendetta Of The Hills (1917), and Buell Hampton (1902).

Throughout his life, Emerson was involved in a succession of shady deals and swindles (more than I have room to describe here!). Somehow magically Emerson always emerged unscathed, leaving in his wake bankrupt companies and indicted associates.

In Kansas, after receiving his law degree and being admitted to the Bar, in 1887 Emerson appeared in Mead County. In that year, he, with others, formed the American Mortgage Trust Company. Others who later appeared with Emerson in various promotions included A. H. Heber, E. T. Brawley and D. W. Higbee. In the "Kansas Sugar Swindle," in the words of the Meade County News, Nov. 1, 1906, p. 4. Emerson filched from Western Kansas Municipalities two and one-half million dollars in bonds and subsidies for fraudulent "Adamson" or "Roasting sugar plants." The scheme involved the sale of County scrip which would be used for the construction of mills to refine sorghum into sugar. The scrip would be redeemed by refunding bonds issued by the sugar company. Local farmers would gain by having a market for the sorghum. A demonstration sorghum mill was constructed to convince the farmers that the system would work. Free booze and free transportation was provided to the demonstration of the new process. The demonstration produced refined sugar. With the success of the demonstration, the farmers purchased the refunding bonds. Contracts were signed for the crops of sorghum to feed the new mill. Unfortunately, when the crops were ready, the mills were not. The refunding bonds were worthless. The farmers lost their investments. In the words of the Meade County News, Emerson and others involved in the scheme "vamoosed" to the west. The vamoosal may have been motivated when it was revealed that the refining demonstration had been secretly sweetened by the addition of barrels of brown sugar into the sorghum syrup. The American Mortgage Trust Company went into receivership and its entire assets sold for $300.

There may have also been an additional incentive for the hasty departure from Kansas. At the time, the natives were restless and seemed to have itchy trigger fingers.

Emerson was entangled, though never indicted, in a mining fraud in Encampment, Wyoming, where he lived from 1897 (after leaving Cripple Creek, Colorado where he had been involved in a crooked gold mine scheme) to 1904. In Encampment, Emerson was involved with the North American Copper Co. which had acquired the operation from the original developers. Emerson and his cohorts then sold stock in excess of the company's actual value by inflating claims about its assets and profitability. Following Emerson's death in 1918, the Prescott [Arizona] Journal Miner referred to Emerson as having creating ""one of the largest mining swindles of the age."

Emerson then moved to California and Nevada and engaged in more promotion of land and mining schemes and just as importantly himself. About 1910, Emerson picked up the title "Colonel" and bragged of his honorary membership in the Grand Army of the Republic.

"Colonel" Emerson's last major promotion was the Emerson Motor Company which promised to build a five passenger motor car that would be better and cheaper than Ford, achieving about 24 miles to the gallon and selling for $395.00. The engine was planned to be purchased from another manufacturer.

Like all of Emerson's promotions, it used grand newspaper promotions and promises of grander returns. Promotional literature written by Emerson himself depicted the vehicle. Unknown to the investors, the depiction of his proposed car was a redrawn vehicle from another motor car manufacturer's catalogue. No design had ever been made of the car except in the imagination.

Advertisements addressed to potential investors depicted a proposed glorious factory. At first, Emerson's advertisements claimed to have a site for its factory in Long Island City, New York. In order to answer criticism that Emerson Motors did not actually have a factory, arrangements were made for obtaining a small facility in Kingston, New York. The reality was far different from that depicted in some of the ads.

Having no intention of actually making cars, Emerson never built an assembly plant. Instead it hastily constructed for promotional purposes nine prototypes, which turned out to be repainted and thinly disguised Fords, powered by Ford engines with serial numbers and markings removed and opened a showroom at 1748 Broadway in New York City to display the fake cars to prospective investors.

The entire venture was, in reality, nothing but an elaborate stock promotion.

In 1916, the New York Tribune did a major expose which excited the interest of the United States Department of Justice. Emerson, along with others, was indicted for using the mails to defraud, having sold $1.5 million in stock in the company (about $30 million today). One of the more interesting items of testimony was that Emerson delegated to an employee the job of bribing a Massachusetts District Attorney in Boston to avoid prosecution for the stock fraud. Emerson was however able to avoid trial and possible conviction by being confined to bed suffering from apoplexy, paralyzed, and dying. Emerson was dropped from the indictment because he was terminally ill, escaping justice for the final time, but his confederates were convicted in June 1918. On December 11, 1918, Emerson died at the home of his son in Los Angeles.

Garrett Putnam Serviss (March 24, 1851 – May 25, 1929) was an American astronomer, popularizer of astronomy, and early science fiction writer. Serviss was born in upstate New York and majored in science at Cornell University. He took a law degree at Columbia University but never worked as an attorney. Instead, in 1876 he joined the staff of the The New York Sun newspaper, working as a journalist until 1892 under editor Charles Dana.



Serviss showed a talent for explaining scientific details in a way that made them clear to the ordinary reader, leading Andrew Carnegie to invite him to deliver The Urania Lectures in 1894 on astronomy, cosmology, geology, and related matters. With Carnegie's financial backing, these lectures were illustrated with magic lantern slides and other effects to show eclipses, presumed lunar landscapes, and much else. Serviss toured the United States for over two years delivering these lectures, then settled down to become a popular speaker in the New York area. He also wrote a syndicated newspaper column devoted to astronomy and other sciences and wrote frequently for the leading magazines of the day.



Serviss' favorite topic was astronomy, and of the fifteen books he wrote, eight are devoted to it. He unquestionably was more widely read by the public on that topic than anyone prior to his time. He worked with Max and Dave Fleischer on The Einstein Theory of Relativity (1923), a short silent film released in connection with one of Serviss' books. He also wrote six works of fiction in his lifetime, all of which would today be classified as science fiction. Five of these were novels, and one was a short story.

The Colour Out Of Space is a collection of seven stories by H. P. Lovecraft, selected from the 1963 Arkham House collection The Dunwich Horror And Others. It was originally published in paperback in June 1964 by Lancer Books under the title The Colour Out Of Space And Others and reprinted by them in 1967 and 1969, with different cover art for each printing.

This is a scan of the August 1972 Lancer Books printing, with a cover price of 95 cents. The actual date of this printing can be found in the print code "8-72" printed at the bottom of the last page of text (page 222). The copyright page only lists the publishing history up through the third printing of March 1969.

The title page, front cover and spine of this 1972 printing all give the title as The Colour Out Of Space. The copyright page gives it as The Colour Out Of Space And Others. The proper bibliographic standard is to use the title as it appears on the title page.

Seven more stories from the Arkham House collection The Dunwich Horror And Others were included in the December 1963 Lancer paperback of the same name. Two stories remained unreprinted by Lancer: "The Outsider" and "The Shadow Over Innsmouth".

These inexpensive Lancer paperback editions served as an introduction to Lovecraft for many Baby Boomers in the 1960s and 1970s.

About The Author:
Howard Phillips Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre. Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he spent most of his life. Among his most celebrated tales is "The Call Of Cthulhu", canonical to the Cthulhu Mythos. Never able to support himself from earnings as author and editor, Lovecraft saw commercial success increasingly elude him in this latter period, partly because he lacked the confidence and drive to promote himself. He subsisted in progressively straitened circumstances in his last years; an inheritance was completely spent by the time he died at the age of 46.

About The Cover Artist:
Victor Valla is of French & Danish parentage and is an artist-educator with over 30 years of experience. He was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa on October 25, 1942. His BFA, in Painting and Illustration is from RIT, in Rochester, NY and his MFA, in Painting and Printmaking, was earned at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.

While on a Tiffany Foundation Grant as a post-graduate, he studied Printmaking in Paris at the famed Atelier 57, and he has taught full-time in Graphic Design, Illustration, and Art History Programs at several of the finest Art Schools in the States. Among these are RIT and Syracuse Universities in NY, Kean University in NJ, and University of the Arts, in PA. He has also taught courses at Montclair State and William Patterson Colleges in NJ, University of Illinois, UALR, in Little Rock, AR, and at several Community Colleges in the Northeast.

In the 1960s and 1970s, he did cover art for magazines (including GQ) and several books including The 1974 World's Annual Best SF and works by Robert E. Howard (The Dark Man And Others) and H. P. Lovecraft (The Colour Out Of Space and The Dunwich Horror).

He is married to Justine Armanini Valla, a Textile Print Designer and Craftsperson. Victor Valla is also an author and has written a novel, The Invasion Of Marcia Lake, which was published in 2013.

Artist's Autobiographical Statement:
"Like many an artist, I have been compelled to work at my craft since I was only ten years old. My first guide was the printed pages that had been Illustrated by the many fine American Artists whose work I collected from the magazines and books that I grew up reading. That became the direction my artistic life would always pivot upon, although I quickly learned to love and create many paintings influenced by the Abstract Expressionist School while in College. I also, (and equally), have been drawn to the Nineteenth Century Academic Painting that had so influenced the Golden Age of Illustration.

This eclectic interest, as far as visual imagery, has inspired me to take many varied directions in my own work. I try not to artificially separate the areas of art in which I work into their usual categories, instead arriving at finished products that each represent my vision, although they are to be used in a large spectrum of areas. These have ranged from the Graphic Arts, to Museum and Gallery Paintings, to Murals, Advertising, and of course the Printed Page. More than any other living artist I have ever encountered, I am still equally challenged by working towards any and all of these end-use directions. Add to that list my latest, most inspiring and creatively fulfilling direction, that of writing literary fiction."

About the scan: This is an Internet Archive color scan from a copy in the Boston Public Library. Six of the eight pages in the original book were damaged because the late 19th-Century binder who bound the pages of this little chapbook into a hardcover binding unintentionally clipped off letters at the edges of the pages when he trimmed the pages, not realizing how narrow the margins were, or that in some cases the page had been printed off-center. I was able to figure out most of the missing letters as I read the story but it wasn't always easy.

I created both .cbr and .pdf versions from the original .jp2 files.

A Journey To The Moon, And Interesting Conversations With The Inhabitants Respecting The Condition Of Man is a brief (eight page) religious tract in short story form with minor science fiction and fantasy elements, written by Scottish missionary John Campbell. The story begins with the narrator looking at the moon through a telescope. Suddenly he is magically transported through space towards the moon, telescope and all (as depicted in the vignette illustration on the title page). Upon arrival, he meets lunar inhabitants with whom he has a discussion of Christianity (the moon people are surprisingly knowledgeable about the Earth's religions).

It was originally published anonymously in chapbook format in 1800 in London by Howard and Evans (and also sold by J. Burditt).

A chapbook is a type of popular literature printed in early modern Europe. The term "chapbook" for this type of literature was coined in the 19th century.

Produced cheaply, chapbooks were commonly small, paper-covered booklets, usually printed on a single sheet folded into books of 8, 12, 16 and 24 pages. They were often illustrated with crude woodcuts, which sometimes bore no relation to the text. When illustrations were included in chapbooks, they were considered popular prints.

The tradition of chapbooks arose in the 16th century, as soon as printed books became affordable, and rose to its height during the 17th and 18th centuries. Many different kinds of ephemera and popular or folk literature were published as chapbooks, such as almanacs, children's literature, folk tales, nursery rhymes, pamphlets, poetry, and political and religious tracts.

About The Author (two biographical sketches):
1. John Campbell (born March 1766 in Edinburgh, Scotland – 4 April 1840 Kingsland, London), was a Scottish missionary and traveller.

He attended the Royal High School and was at one time apprenticed to a goldsmith. Campbell helped found the Magdalene Society, a Religious Tract Society of Scotland in 1793, and the Missionary Magazine in Edinburgh in 1796. His consuming interest in Christian philanthropy led him to preach widely in neglected villages and hamlets, promote the establishing of numerous Sunday schools and found societies like the Magdalene Asylum to help prostitutes in Edinburgh and Glasgow. His opposition to the slave trade led to his involvement in the foundation of the Society for the Education of Africans. He collaborated with James Alexander Haldane in bringing some 30-40 African children to be educated in England. Following the Haldane Revival, Campbell became a Congregational Church minister. He was minister at Kingsland, an independent chapel he had founded, from 1802. He was instrumental in founding the British and Foreign Bible Society and became a director of the London Missionary Society.

The London Missionary Society sent him to the Cape in June 1812 to inspect the mission stations there. He set off from Cape Town in February 1813, calling in at Bethelsdorp and Grahamstown, then the military headquarters. Heading north he visited Graaff-Reinet and Klaarwater (later Griquatown), and then travelled further north to Litakun, the kraal of the Batlhaping kgosi (chief) Mothibi. His return trip went via Klaarwater, Pella and the Kamiesberge, arriving in Cape Town at the end of October. He wrote an account of this trip as "Travels in South Africa, undertaken at the request of the Missionary Society" and it was published on his return to London in 1815. The town of Campbell, east of Griquatown, was named in his honor.

Campbell returned to the Cape in February 1819 in the company of Dr. John Philip. His orders were to inspect and improve the mission stations which had fallen into a neglected state. On this visit he instructed the missionary Robert Moffat to start a mission among the Bechuana tribe. Campbell once more ventured into the interior, leaving Cape Town in January 1820 and travelling as far north as Mosega in Barotseland, on which journey he also came across the large settlement of Kaditshwene near the Limpopo River. He left for England in February 1821, publishing two further volumes covering his second journey. He subsequently delivered a series of lectures on his missionary work.

2. CAMPBELL, JOHN (1766–1840), philanthropist and traveller, was born at Edinburgh and educated at the high school, where he was a classfellow of Sir Walter Scott. From an early period of life he showed very deep religious convictions. Though engaged in business, he threw himself with great ardour into works of christian philanthropy, and led the way in many undertakings that have since attained remarkable dimensions.

He became in 1793 one of the founders of the Religious Tract Society of Scotland, six years before the London society was formed. The Scotch society still exists, but on a wider basis, employing about two hundred colporteurs for the circulation and sale of religious and useful literature in Scotland and part of England. He was one of the founders of Sunday schools, sometimes itinerating over the country in order to promote them, and with such success that on one occasion he and his friend Mr. J. A. Haldane made arrangements in one week for the establishment of not less than sixty. Lay preaching in neglected villages and hamlets was another mode of activity in which he took part. He was one of the first to show compassion practically for fallen women, being among the originators of the Magdalene Society of Edinburgh, and a similar society in Glasgow.

The condition of slaves excited his profound interest; and through the liberality of Mr. Haldane he made arrangements for bringing to this country and educating thirty or forty African children, who were to be sent back to their own country. In furtherance of this object he corresponded with his friend Mr. Zachary Macaulay, then at Sierra Leone, with whose family he was on intimate terms; but after the first batch of children were brought to this country, the arrangement was changed and they were kept in London.

In 1802 Campbell became minister of Kingsland independent chapel in London, and there, among other labors of love, helped to found the Bible Society. Occasionally he still continued his peripatetic work in Scotland. Having always shown a profound interest in foreign missions, he was asked by the London Missionary Society to go to South Africa and inspect their missions there. He spent two years, 1812-14, in this work, travelling upwards of two thousand miles in Africa, and a second time, 1819-21, he went out on the same mission. Few Englishmen at that time had performed such a feat, and on his return his appearances on missionary platforms in London and throughout the country were received with enthusiasm. He died 4 April 1840, at the age of 74.

Besides some books of less mark, Campbell was the author of two works giving an account of his two African journeys, the first in one vol. 8vo, published in 1814, the second in two vols. 8vo, published in 1822. A little volume entitled 'African Light' was intended to elucidate passages of scripture from what he had seen in travelling. For many years he was editor of a religious magazine entitled 'The Youth's Magazine.' He had a large acquaintance and correspondence, including the Countess of Leven, the Rev. John Newton, Mr. Wilberforce, and others. His books were among those that exercised an influence on the mind of David Livingstone, and turned his thoughts to Africa.

About The Editor:
Maurice Horn is an internationally recognized authority on comics and cartoons. He was co-organizer of the first exhibition held at a major museum, "Bande Dessinée at Figuration Narrative," at the Louvre in Paris. He also organized the exhibition "75 Years of the Comics" at the New York Cultural Center.

He has lectured on comics and cartoons at universities worldwide, and his European series of lectures in 1973-74 was printed in Information et Documents, the official publication of the American Center in Paris. He has written hundreds of articles on the subject for American and foreign magazines and has contributed to Collier's Encyclopedia, Oxford University Press' American National Biography, and to The International Encyclopedia Of Communication, as well as to Microsoft's on-line Encarta Encyclopedia. He has edited a number of reprints of classic American and European comic strips, and has received many awards and honors in the field.
Many of the books he has authored or edited have become standard reference works in their field. He is the editor of The World Encyclopedia Of Comics (2nd ed., 1998) and The World Encyclopedia Of Cartoons (2nd ed. 1999). In addition he has edited 100 Years Of American Newspaper Comics and the multi-volume Contemporary Graphic Artists. Tarzan: The Lost Adventure is a novel written by Joe R. Lansdale based on an incomplete fragment of a Tarzan novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs but left unfinished at his death. The book was serialized in four parts by Dark Horse Comics, before being published as a single volume in December 1995. The Lost Adventure is the twenty-eighth book published in the authorized Tarzan novel series. It follows the 24 main novels and two short children's novels (all by Burroughs) and the 1966 Fritz Leiber novel Tarzan And The Valley Of Gold, which was authorized by the Burroughs estate.

In Burroughs' last Tarzan story, left unfinished at the time of his death, the ape man plays guardian to an expedition seeking the lost city of Ur. In addition to Tarzan himself, his animal companions Jad-bal-ja, the golden lion, and Nkima, the little monkey, appear. Burroughs' manuscript ends before Ur is reached, but in the novel as completed by Lansdale, Ur turns out to be a society revering a giant and supposedly immortal praying mantis, which is used to slay condemned prisoners in the arena. Tarzan speculates that the creature is originally from the underground world of Pellucidar, to which Ur is connected by a system of caverns and passages. Trapped underground at the end of the story, he seeks escape by seeking out the route to Pellucidar himself.

The novel received generally favorable reviews at the time of its release. In the 2005 essay "Forty More Years Of Adventure" (which is included in the 2005 edition of Master Of Adventure: The Worlds Of Edgar Rice Burroughs by Richard A. Lupoff), Phillip R. Burger praises Lansdale's prose style in the novel as an "appropriate extension in the evolution of Burroughs' prose" (but asks "Would Burroughs have ever made Tarzan battle a 'croc'?") and welcomes Lansdale's depiction of Tarzan as the "elemental force" and the "vicious 'throw the severed head into the enemy's camp' ape-man" of the earlier Burroughs Tarzan novels.

Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875 – March 19, 1950) was an American writer best known for his creations of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, although he produced works in many genres.

Joe Richard Lansdale (born October 28, 1951) is an American writer, author, martial arts expert, and martial arts instructor.

Lansdale has written novels and stories in many genres, including Western, horror, science fiction, mystery, and suspense. He has also written for comics as well as Batman: The Animated Series. He has written 45 novels and published 30 short story collections along with many chapbooks and comic book adaptations. Several of his novels have been adapted to film.

The 1977 Sundays went so quick I decided to work backwards using the ILoveComix scans. Primarily I renamed everything (which revealed file duplicates that I then eliminated) and filled ALL the gaps with the most complete and / or best copies that I could find on Newspapers.com.



Had I not been involved in other projects, I'd have trimmed, color corrected, deskewed and replaced the undersized scans. But I concentrated on being complete. Please let me know of any mistakes / omissions.



There is consistency in the naming but I noticed after uploading that some years have a double space between 'Lil Abner' and the date, so if you try to break these up into stories, the ones that span a couple of those years won't sort correctly. Oops.



I stopped working backwards at 1966 because 1964 and 1965 were missing too many strips for me to do quickly. Another project for another day.



Also, ILoveComix had very, very few dailies in that stretch. If anyone wants to put together a group of fans to correct that oversight, I remind you that you can get as many free trials at Newspapers.com as you can create unique email and credit card combinations. If you need hints on how to find and download these dailies quickly, I can write up a page explaining.

Oh and the US Air Force chose Dr. Van Allen to be the expert in charge of testing outer space for radiation, because they knew he was the most qualified expert on finding the TRUE levels of radiation outside the earths atmosphere and the best expert on what damages the radiation would do to the human body if subjected to that amount of radiation.
