Enlil also sent his general, Abraham (son of Ur’s High Priest Terah), now trained in Hatti in Hittite military tactics, with cavalry to Canaan. After Abraham left Harran for Sinai, Maruk allied with Adad/Teshub, ousted Nannar, moved in and cut Sumer’s trade with the Hittites. 2047 B.C. Marduk’s son Nabu brought cities west of the Euphrates and Canaan against the Enlilites. Marduk’s Egyptians in the south attacked his enemies in Northern Egypt. Elam’s King Kudur-Laghamar threatened the Enlil’s Sinai Spaceport. 2041 B.C. Abraham with Enlil’s men and camels and Northern Egyptians blocked both Nabu’s forces and Ninurta’s Elamites from the Spaceport. 2040 B.C. Mentuhotep II, Marduk’s Theban Pharaoh, took Egypt all the way to the western approaches to Sinai. Amar-Sin sailed to Sinai to block Marduk’s Egyptians, defected to Enki and became his priest in Eridu, Enki’s cult center in Sumer. Amar-Sin died suspiciously of a poisonous bite. Thothmose III attacked Enlilites abroad and brutilized Israelites within Egypt. Moses killed an Egyptian overseer. Though Pharoh ordered Moses killed, he escaped to Sinai and there married a Midianite priest’s daughter. 1450 B.C. Amenhotep II, the new Pharaoh, let Moses’ death sentence expire. Enlil told Moses, “Go to Egypt, show the Pharoh magic. Tell him to let my people go.” But Amenhotep instead demanded the Israelites make three times more bricks. They subdued all Sumer except Lagash, her Uncle Ninurta’s fief. She led Sargon’s army through Luristan in the Zagros Mountains. With the army and her mass-killing weapons, she and Sargon united Sumer. The Akkadians crossed the forbidden Forth Region, the region forbidden to Earthlings. Inanna and the Akkadians conquered Jerico, which switched alliance from Nannar to her. Chitauli means "the dictators, the ones who tell us the law". In other words, "they who tell us, secretly, what we are to do". Now, it is said that these Chitauli did a number of things to us… Chitauli also forced human beings human beings to mine into the Earth. Ancient Pagan Gnostics insights documented by Dr. John Lash refers to Chitauli as the ‘Archons‘ which means “rulers or “controllers“. Don Quixote is one “lost” Welles film that is surely doomed to remain that way: unfinished, fragmented, a puzzle with pieces that have been recut so many times they simply don’t fit together. Welles jokingly renamed the film “When Are You Going to Finish Don Quixote?” because he continued to rewrite and reconceptualize the film as he went along. It’s as if the act of creating in the moment was the point, not the finished production. Financed solely by himself, it perhaps became a project so personal that he couldn’t finish, and it remained in fragments when he died in 1985. The DVD release of the 1992 “reconstruction” haphazardly cobbled together by legendary exploitation director turned indifferent B-movie hack Jesus Franco (he was an assistant to Welles during some of the principle photography) isn’t about to change that. Oja Kodar, Welles’ muse/partner/collaborator for the final decades of his life, sold the rights to the footage in her possession to Franco and producer Patxi Irigoyen (they also acquired the footage from Suzanne Cloutier), but was terribly disappointed at the resulting film. According to longtime Welles cameraman and friend Gary Graver, Franco and Irigoyen used practically every scrap of footage they had, including sequences he had shot for a Spanish TV documentary he made in the middle of production (another little project to get more production funds). Certainly it’s hard enough to guess at Welles’ intentions from the notes and partially-edited footage (in various stages of rough cut) left behind over the course of a decade of shooting on the run and dragging the footage around from country to country as he tinkered with the editing, but there is little evidence of any serious attempt at a legitimate reconstruction from the film on display, and it’s missing vital footage that remains in the possession of the film’s original editor, Mauro Bonanni, who was not invited to participate in the project. From what I know about Welles and the history of the film, Franco’s version is not even an approximation, never mind a reconstruction. There’s no story here, simply a random succession of events and images and a whole lot of narrative detours. But even as a visual record of Welles’ raw footage it’s a travesty. It’s a given that much of the existing rough cut footage is in rough condition, showing the signs of wear and tear from years of tinkering on moviolas and dragging the reels from country to country. But Franco and company have, if anything, compounded the problems with hazy, blurry copies of the master footage and video noise introduced as a result of the project’s most egregious crimes against Welles: the video manipulation of footage to layer images one on another. At one point, the sails of a windmill are stretched across the screen (to suggest a windmill come to life and reach out to Quixote? was that in the notes, Franco, or was it all your inspiration?). The soundtrack is no better. Franco uses fragments of recorded dialogue (with Welles providing the voices of both Quixote and Sancho as well as the narration) and fills in the rest of the film with voices that barely resemble Welles’ work. You have to have to watch the mouths move just to pick out the speakers in this dissonant audio mess. I had the opportunity to watch an eighty-minute version of the film, cut down by Kodar and Graver to, at the very least, cut down the clutter of Franco’s all-in approach. That version is a disappointment, to say the least, but this is a travesty. And it’s the only version around. Screen capture from the Image DVD of "Don Quixote" (from Gary W. Tooze at DVD Beaver). The distracting lines on the outline of Sancho's face and collar are an example of "interlacing," according to Tooze, the result of a poor PAL to NTSC transfer. It wasn’t exactly a moot point in the past, but frankly it was (at least in North America) only Welles aficionados who had any access to the film in past, either through film festival screenings or import DVDs (it was previously available as a PAL import from Spain and France). Yes, they were the audience most prone to be upset and offended by the work. They were also largely an informed audience who understood that this was not an Orson Welles film, but a hack job purporting to be a legitimate take on an unfinished project. The stateside DVD release makes this film widely accessible to any number of viewers who have no context for the production and will attribute the finished film – and the appalling manipulations to the original material – to Welles. That’s neither a service to the artist nor to the public. The new Image disc is taken directly from the PAL source, which only adds to the visual noise (comparisons between the DVD versions can be found at DVD Beaver, courtesy of Gary W. Tooze), and it features no supplements of any kind, let alone an explanation of the real story behind this version of the film. I don’t hold Image, the producer of the DVD, at all responsible for the content of Franco’s production. It is the only authorized version available and they surely felt an opportunity to make a rarity available to the public. However, with context, the release is almost meaningless. There’s an opportunity to do something interesting with this unfinished and unfinishable film. This isn’t it. Glorious Quixote – Not on DVD Dennis Lim did a nice job of parsing the issues surrounding Franco’s film in the Los Angeles Times this week, and he offers a tip to see an essential sequence shot by Welles but not included in the film (it’s in the possession of Mauro Bonanni, who, at least at one time, had hoped to be involved in a reconstruction of the film himself). Click here for Don Quixote (with accompaniment by Nico) Don Quixote goes to the movies - see Patty McCormack screen right It’s a scene Quixote charging a movie screen and slicing it to tatters while “fighting” the figures projected upon it to the hoots and cheers of the movie audience – Welles’ modern answer to tilting at windmills. The scene also features Patty McCormack, the child star of The Bad Seed who Welles cast in the original framing sequence to the film. He reportedly scrapped those scenes as he rethought the film through the years of on-and-off shooting, so it’s unlikely the scene would have even made it into an accurate recreation of Welles’ intentions (if such a thing could be even remotely possible at this time), but it is a delicious scene and, even with the accompaniment by Nico in the YouTube clip (she drones Jim Morrison’s “The End”), it’s a more authentic piece of lost Welles than most everything in the Image DVD. The Latin American country had its state copper producer's ratings upped amid assessments of a continuing lead in copper production and its positive effect on the economy. Canadian Casablanca Mining, in a news release, outlined plans by its wholly owned Chilean subsidiary, Santa Teresa Minerals, S.A., to finish preparations for exploitation of its Casuto gold property in IV Region Coquimbo, Choapa province, about 120 miles northwest of Santiago. The Casuto project includes 22 contiguous exploration concessions more than 6,200 hectares. The deposit is thought to extend through the valley and into Chigualoco Bay for about 8 miles. Abundant historic pits, shafts and underground workings are evidence of the historical exploitation, the company said. The Casuto-Chigualoco River basin and estuary, protected over the years from sea tides, holds gold deposits carried by the river instead of being carried out to sea. Gold in the Jurassic rocks of the area is thought to be of a high grade. In a gold rush from 1836 to 1846, Casuto grew to about 6,000 workers in a town with more than 40 stores and trading houses. Skimpy records cite gold output during the period to have averaged 24-48 pounds a day. The Casuto gold boom slowed due to river sedimentation and waterlogging of shafts. Current government plans call for a vigorous recovery in gold exploration and production. U.S. Geological Survey statistics indicate Chile, fourth in the world in terms of untapped gold reserves, after Russia and ahead of the United States, is looking to boost its gold output. In 2011, Chile mined 50 tons of gold, but its potential could be as high as 3,750 tons. That would place Chile, 17th largest gold producer, closer to the top 10 -- the government's stated target. Fitch Ratings this month affirmed its ratings on state copper producer Corporacion Nacional del Cobre to stress the strategic importance of the metal's exports. Codelco's net revenue in 2011 of $17.5 billion accounted for 7 percent of Chile's gross domestic production and 31 percent of general government revenues. "Fitch views Codelco's long-life copper reserves as a strategic asset for Chile because it should allow the company to remain an important contributor to government revenues in the future," Fitch said. "Codelco possesses immense copper deposits, accounting for 9 percent of the world's known proven and probable reserves," the rating agency said. Fitch says Chile's rating could be upgraded as a result of stronger economic growth prospects. That’s a bit disingenuous, considering how meticulously (and often very cleverly) it sets up the building blocks of Alien, but his pointed use of the term DNA is telling. It opens with a very different answer to Genesis, where Earth is seeded with alien genetic material, and then jumps ahead a few billion years to follow a crew of scientists (including Noomi Rapace) retracing an ancient trail through the stars left behind by the ancients. Mirroring Alien, we have a colorful crew (this time mostly scientists), a corporate directive (monitored by Charlize Theron), and an android (Michael Fassbender, superb) on the bridge charged with completing that directive, but otherwise this is far from the gothic monster movie of the 1979 original. At its most ambitious, Prometheus plants suggestions of the extraterrestrial origins of life on Earth, a Godlike race sowing genetic seeds across galaxy, and even an Old Testament-like sense of retribution, or at the very least a feeling of failure that calls for a reboot. With all this happening, I’m left with a nagging question: How can Ridley Scott have such a sophisticated visual intelligence, creating screen worlds engineered in such detail as to suggest entire cultures behind the designs and technology, and then fill those worlds with characters who are supposed to be scientists yet act like kids in a playroom? Seriously, the reason these supposedly top scientists of the late 21st century keep yelling “Don’t touch anything” to each other is because otherwise they’ll fingerpaint their way through the most important scientific discoveries since the mapping of the human genome. The script fails to match its ambition, but at least give it credit for big ideas, unexpected conceptual turns, and a dense and dramatic visual experience. “Prometheus” hints at something bigger, more cosmic and philosophically daring, than what the characters actually manage to grapple with on screen. And for all its failures in the realm of human behavior, the cosmic mystery behind the story is enigmatic and remains so to the end. After pumping out 17 million gallons of water from the basement, the water is still two and a half feet deep in the cavernous basement where the fuel pumps apparently shorted out and became inoperable — unable to feed the 13th-floor backup generators, Mr. Aviles said. “If we can get this hospital back up within two to three weeks we will be doing really well,” he said. “Nothing has happened like this in Bellevue’s 275-year history.” Bellevue is on the East River, in the blacked-out portion of Manhattan south of 34th Street. An evacuation had been under way for two days, doctors said, with the most critical patients and all but a few infants transferred to other hospitals before Wednesday, as volunteers and then the National Guard mounted a bucket-brigade to supply diesel fuel to the generators. The evacuation had been a “slow trickle” since Monday, when the storm surge from the hurricane hit, said Matthew McCarty, 24, a New York University medical student who had been volunteering at Bellevue, doing everything from carrying patients and holding flashlights to ferrying fuel to the generators on the 13th floor. Outside the hospital on Wednesday, ambulances lined up to ferry patients elsewhere, and inside, relatives sought information about where patients had been sent. The Greater New York Hospital Association, a hospital trade group, worked into Wednesday evening with the State Health Department and emergency management officials to find beds for the patients at other hospitals, some of which had just absorbed more than 300 patients from NYU Langone Medical Center, also a casualty of failed backup power. Brian Conway, a spokesman for the hospital association, said: “The New York hospital community has always come through in finding beds for evacuated patients, and we’re confident that’ll happen again, but we’re pushing the envelope right now. This is an unprecedented challenge.” The Health Department authorized “surge-capacity plans” that allow hospitals to accept patients beyond their normal capacity in a disaster, if necessary converting nonclinical space like conference rooms and auditoriums into dorm-style wards. Appeals for other hospitals to take Bellevue patients went out at midday. Among those responding was Continuum Health Partners, which offered to take as many as 200 patients at its St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals, Jim Mandler, a spokesman said. Mount Sinai Hospital, which took in 64 emergency evacuees from NYU Langone on Monday, offered to take about 40 patients from Bellevue, and Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn offered spaces for 50 patients. The U.S. death toll from the giant storm named Sandy has risen to at least 63 today. About 6.5 million homes and businesses are still without electricity, though there were signs of daily life returning to its usual rhythm in some places. A familiar sound returned to Lower Manhattan streets last night. Police helped direct traffic with signals still dark, but one taxi driver said it wasn't worth the risk. MAN: It's been dangerous. I have got to go home. I can walk. There's no traffic signal light, no nothing there. QUESTION: You're going home? You're done? MAN: I'm done already. qUESTION: It wasn't much easier for pedestrians who made their way on foot, some with only flashlights leading the way. MAN: It's really unsettling because we don't have power. We don't know what's going on. We don't have anywhere to get to televisions. QUESTION: Many people flocked to mobile charging stations across the city, plugging in cell phones and other devices. But today brought some sign of things slowly returning to normal in the Big Apple. This morning, Mayor Michael Bloomberg rang the opening bell on Wall Street, where activity returned to the trading floor. Commuters crowded near bus stops with routes now up and running. Others walked across city bridges alongside cars snarled in traffic jams. Some Broadway shows returned to the stage as well. The subway system remains closed, as crews work to clear stations that are still flooded, a task New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said is being prioritized. GOV. ANDREW CUOMO, D-N.Y.: Getting the water out of the tunnels is probably the main -- one of the main orders of business right now. These are significant challenges that we're facing and problems, in many cases, that we have never experienced before or not in a generation. QUESTION: Cuomo announced limited subway service will start Thursday morning. Flooding kept La Guardia airport closed. JFK and Newark airports have resumed some travel. And high waters led to a number of rooftop rescues of trapped residents yesterday in Staten Island. Late today, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said most bridges and tunnels will be restricted to high-occupancy vehicles for the next several days. But he said his city is on the road to recovery. MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG, I-New York: The bottom line is, we have lost some people. We have to make sure we help their families and pray for them. We at the same time have to make sure that we go forward here and keep this city going. It's making sure that the tourists come here, that we have visitors, that we have jobs for people. Those are the things that we have to do. And we can do them in the name of those we lost. Thank you very much. QUESTION: In New Jersey, aerial views of helicopters revealed scenes of total devastation, entire neighborhoods underwater in OceanCounty, an amusement park along the JerseyShore in SeasideHeights in disarray, with some rides washed away by the waves. Those displaced by the storm have been taking shelter in gymnasiums and other facilities. WOMAN: We never went trough anything like this. We may have had a storm where it blew a couple of things back and forth, but for us to be flooded out of our homes, animals all over the place, disheveled. MAN: I'm 69 years old, and it's the worst that I have ever seen it in my life. GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE, R-N.J.: Halloween on Monday in New Jersey, all right? QUESTION: Today, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie met with residents in Sayreville. Many he spoke to were in tears. WOMAN: I have got nothing left, memories or anything else. Everything's ruined, ruined. CHRIS CHRISTIE: I wanted to come and see Sayreville today before I see the president this afternoon. I want him to understand that it's not just the Jersey Shore that's been devastated, but other parts of our state as well that were damaged by the storm surge. He can't be everywhere obviously across the state today. QUESTION: A short time later, Gov. Christie greeted President Obama and Federal Emergency Management Agency head Craig Fugate in Atlantic City. The trio toured the storm damage along the coast. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: We're going to have a lot of work to do. I don't want anybody to feel that somehow this is all going to get cleaned up overnight. We want to make sure that people have realistic expectations. But what I can promise you is that the federal government will be working as closely as possible with the state and local officials, and we will not quit until this is done. And the directive that I have given -- and I said this yesterday, but I will repeat -- and I think Craig and others who are working with me right now know I mean it -- we are not going to tolerate red tape, we're not going to tolerate bureaucracy. QUESTION: Meanwhile, Republican Mitt Romney returned to the campaign trail today with three events in Florida. The GOP presidential nominee also mentioned the ongoing recovery in the Northeast. MITT ROMNEY (R): This is -- this is quite a time for the country, as you know. We're -- we're going through trauma in a major part of the country, a kind of trauma you have experienced here in Florida more than once. And -- and it's interesting to see how people come together in a circumstance like this. We have seen folks from all over the country step forward and -- and offer contributions. QUESTION: Bumps in the recovery were evident in New York City late today, where the public BellevueHospital started evacuating about 500 patients because of deteriorating conditions. GWEN IFILL: A short time ago, Governor Cuomo confirmed that New York's La Guardia Airport will open for some flights tomorrow morning. For more on today's developments, we're joined again tonight by Warren Levinson of the Associated Press. He's been making his way around New York City today, and is just back from a trip to the evacuated BellevueHospital. Warren, what do we know about why they decided to send patients away? WARREN LEVINSON, The Associated Press: Well, we're not getting a lot of information from the hospital, Gwen, but essentially what happened is just like New YorkUniversityHospital up the road from them, they lost power when the storm hit. They had emergency generators. More of their emergency generators than NYUHospital were working, and so they were able to maintain power. But when they took a really hard look what's going on the basement, they realized, we have got 17 million gallons of seawater in here and these generators are not going to hold up. So, discretion being the better part of valor, they're moving patients. It's a massive undertaking and probably won't be done for a day or so, nearly 500 patients who have to go. They were, as the storm was approaching, diverting patients to other hospitals, but it's a laborious process to find a bed for somebody and then get that person into an ambulance and move them out, starting with the sickest. GWEN IFILL: Seventeen million gallons of seawater sounds amazing, actually. I want to ask you about two other things that Mayor Bloomberg talked about today in his briefings. One is that if you want to get in a car and drive into Manhattan tomorrow, there are now limitations. What are those limitations? WARREN LEVINSON: The limitations are that starting at 6:00 in the morning, it's three people per vehicle. Apparently, police will be there keeping you from getting into the city, getting into Manhattan. If you try, they will pull you over, won't let you in, and all the other drivers will whiz by. That's mainly it. What we saw today was an increase in traffic as people wanting to get back to some sense of normality getting around, because we still don't have subways. We do have buses, but the buses that I saw today were really, really packed and mainly sitting in traffic. GWEN IFILL: And the other thing that the mayor talked about was that he is canceling the opening tip for the basketball game in Brooklyn this weekend, but that he's not canceling the New York Marathon, which is supposed to take place this weekend. What's the reasoning behind those two decisions? WARREN LEVINSON: Well, the marathon is Sunday. GWEN IFILL: Right. WARREN LEVINSON: Well, the marathon is Sunday, so that you have a little bit more time to get ready for it. The basketball game is tomorrow -- or was to be tomorrow night. The key thing with the basketball game is that the great selling point of the new arena in Brooklyn is it sits on top of 11 mass transit lines. None of them are running. The hope is, I suppose, that the marathon can somehow get it together, that it mostly goes through major roads and that they will be mostly clear for marathon runners. It will be a big question, a big challenge, first of all, for them getting here from somewhere else, especially if they're flying in, and of course, people supporting them getting to where they want to see them on the course. It's going to be awfully difficult. GWEN IFILL: Warren, it looks like almost a tale of two cities. Behind you, we can see the skyline of New York, but we also know that there's a huge swathe of the city still operating without power, without juice, without anything that approaches what you describe as normalcy. As you were traveling around the city today, how did that manifest itself? WARREN LEVINSON: The thing that I saw that stands out to me is the number of people that I saw gathered around fire hydrants getting water into any container they could manage, because they haven't got water in their homes. In fact, we even saw kids in Halloween costumes with their Halloween buckets held up to the fire hydrant to get water because they'd run out of buckets at home. GWEN IFILL: How about gas lines? We have been hearing that gasoline is getting harder to come by. WARREN LEVINSON: We hear that gasoline is harder to come by. I didn't personally see any gas lines, but I wouldn't be at all surprised. Awfully difficult to deliver gasoline under these circumstances. GWEN IFILL: Are any officials at this point, other than the reopening that we saw late this afternoon of La Guardia and the partial opening of the other two airports, are any officials beginning to give any kind of timetable of when we are going to see full operation of subways, other transit lines, of bridges, of tunnels? WARREN LEVINSON: Anybody who gives an actual specific deadline for when things will actually be fully running is living in a fool's paradise. The problem really is not just that there's damage, not just that there's water. You can kind of figure out how long it will take water to be pumped out, but then you can't -- you can't know until the water is pumped out and you closely inspect equipment how much damage there is underneath. GWEN IFILL: And one final kind of experiential thing. Are people frustrated or are they taking this in stride? What is the mood of the people you have been talking to on the street today? WARREN LEVINSON: Well, Gwen, you have seen what happens in disasters. At first, it's a break in the routine. It's bad, but if everybody is OK, it's kind of a party, it's kind of different. But after a while, it gets frustrating. You get out of the things that make your life work and it makes you unhappy. You saw the frustration in people you talked to where they're kind of struggling to recover from the storm. So the longer it goes on, the more the frustration level will build up. We haven't really seen it break at any point or explode at any point, but it's not all that far away. GWEN IFILL: Warren Levinson of the Associated Press, thanks so much. Most Holocaust survivors experienced extreme trauma as children, suffered serious malnutrition, and lost almost all of their relatives — leaving them today with severe psychological and medical problems, and little or no family support network to help them cope. In acknowledgement of that, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was to sign off officially Thursday on revisions to the original 1952 compensation treaty, increasing pensions for those living in eastern Europe and broadening who is eligible for payments. Contributions to home care for survivors already have been increased. "Survivors are passing away on a daily basis but the other side is that individual survivors are needing more help than ever," the Chairman of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, Julius Berman, told The Associated Press. "While a person came out of the camps very young and eventually developed a life of their own over the years, the impact of what happened at the beginning is now coming to the fore. Whether it's mentally or physically, they're sicker than their peers of the same age." Germany has paid — primarily to Jewish survivors — some €70 billion ($89 billion) in compensation overall for Nazi crimes since the agreement was signed in 1952. In one change to the treaty that Germany agreed to earlier this year, the country will provide compensation payments to a new category of Nazi victims — some 80,000 Jews who fled ahead of the advancing German army and mobile killing squads and eventually resettled in the former Soviet Union. They became eligible Nov. 1 for one-time payments of €2,556 ($3,253). The amendment also formalizes an increase in pensions for Holocaust survivors living in formerly communist eastern Europe to the same as those living elsewhere — €300 ($382) per month — from the €200 to €260 ($255 to $331) they had been receiving. Schaeuble said on Inforadio ahead of the signing ceremony at the Jewish Museum that once Germany and the Claims Conference had identified the additional victims living in the east, it was only natural to include them in the compensation agreement. "We still do not know the names of all of the victims," Schaeuble said. "The crimes of the Holocaust were so inconceivably enormous that you can't know all of the victims or those with claims, so you have to adjust it again and again." Germany already increased payments this year for home care for Holocaust survivors by 15 percent over 2011, and has pledged to raise that further in 2013 and 2014. Compensation has been ever evolving since the 1952 agreement, with annual negotiations between the Claims Conference and the German government on who should receive funds and how much will be paid. Still, even 67 years after the end of World War II, there is much to set right, said Stuart Eizenstat, the former U.S. ambassador to the European Union who serves as the Claims Conference's special negotiator. "One of the things that drives me is that with all of that, the best surveys out there are there are probably 500,000 survivors alive today worldwide and half of them are in poverty or very close to the poverty line," he told the AP. "This is an ongoing responsibility — this is not the end of the road." Eizenstat said it is a tribute to Germany and officials there that the country continues to acknowledge responsibility for Nazi-era crimes — both with the compensation payments and also in its actions. "I was very much taken by the degree to which they had come to terms with World War II and were dealing with its consequences, through mandatory Holocaust education; through seemingly small, but important, things like putting plaques in front of homes of Jews who had been expelled; by building a monumental above-ground Holocaust memorial right in the center of reunified Berlin," he said. "It's a very sharp contrast to what Japan has done in recognizing their responsibilities... it's quite striking." Conference chairman Berman said the fact that the German government decided to host an event to announce the latest results of negotiations with the Claims Conference at a Berlin event shows it remains committed. "To me the most significant part of this event ... is that the German government wanted it ... telling again not only the whole world but more importantly telling the German people that it's not over," he said. ññññññññññññññññññññ The "Flatwoods Monster" 1952 .................by Doctor Farthon Climbor. There are two entities associated with the Flatwoods Monster. The first was described as being a large pulsating red ball of light that hovered above or rested upon the ground. Ufologists believe that it may have been a powered craft that was piloted by the second entity. Various descriptions of the second entity exist. Most agree that it was at least 10 feet tall and that it had a red face which appeared to glow from within, and a green body. Witnesses described the creature's head as having bulging, non-human eyes and as either being shaped like a heart/an Ace of Spades or as having a large heart/Ace of Spades shaped cowling behind it. The creature's body was described as being man-shaped and clad in a dark pleated skirt; later described as being green. Some accounts record that the creature had no visible arms, while others describe it as having short stubby arms; ending in long claw-like fingers, which protruded from the front of its body. At 7:15 PM on the evening of September 12 1952, two brothers, Edward and Fred May, and their friend Tommy Hyer (ages 13, 12, and 10) witnessed a bright object cross the sky. The object appeared to come to rest on land belonging to local farmer G. Bailey Fisher. Upon witnessing the object, the boys went to the home of the May brothers' mother, Kathleen May, where they reported seeing a UFO crash land in the hills. From there, Mrs. May accompanied by the three boys, local children Neil Nunley (14) and Ronnie Shaver (10), and 17 year old West Virginia National Guardsman Eugene 'Gene' Lemon, traveled to the Fisher farm in an effort to locate whatever it was that the boys had seen. Lemon's dog ran ahead out of sight and suddenly began barking, and moments later ran back to the group with its tail between its legs. After traveling about ¼ of a mile the group reached the top of a hill, where they reportedly saw a large pulsating "ball of fire" about 50 feet to their right. They also detected a pungent mist that made their eyes and nose burn. Lemon then noticed two small lights over to the left of the object; underneath a nearby Oak tree, and directed his flashlight towards them, revealing the creature, which is reported to have emitted a shrill hissing noise and to have begun to glide towards them before changing direction and heading off towards the red light. At this point the group fled in panic. Upon returning home Mrs. May contacted local Sheriff Robert Carr, and Mr. A. Lee Stewert; co-owner of the Braxton Democrat, a local newspaper. Stewert conducted a number of interviews and returned to the site with Lemon later that night where he reported that "there was a sickening, burnt, metallic odor still prevailing". Sheriff Carr and his deputy Burnell Long searched the area separately, but reported finding no trace of the encounter. Early the next morning; on Saturday September 13, Mr. A Lee Stewart visited the site of the encounter for a second time and discovered two elongated tracks in the mud, as well as traces of a thick black liquid. He immediately reported them as being possible signs of a saucer landing based on the premise that the area had not been subjected to vehicle traffic for at least a year. It would later be revealed that the tracks most likely belonged to a 1942 Chevrolet pick-up truck driven by local Max Lockard; who had gone to the site to look for the creature some hours prior to Stewert's discovery. After the event, Mr. William and Donna Smith; investigators associated with Civilian Saucer Investigation, LA, obtained a number of accounts from witnesses who claimed to have experienced a similar or related phenomena. These accounts included the story of a mother and her 21 year-old-daughter, who claimed to have encountered a creature with the same appearance and odor a week prior to the September 12 incident; the encounter reportedly affected the daughter so badly that she was confined to Clarksburg Hospital for three weeks. A statement from the mother of Eugene Lemon, in which she said that, at the approximate time of the crash, her house had been violently shaken and her radio had cut out for 45 minutes, and a report from the director of the local Board of Education in which he claimed to have seen a flying saucer taking off at 6:30 on the morning of September 13 (the morning after the creature was sighted). After encountering the creature, several members of the September 12 group reported being overcome with similar symptoms which persisted for some time, which they attributed to having been exposed to the mist emitted by the creature. The symptoms included irritation of the nose and swelling of the throat. Lemon was reportedly the worst affected. He suffered from vomiting and convulsions throughout the night, and had difficulties with his throat for several weeks afterwards. A doctor who treated several of the witnesses is reported to have described their symptoms as being similar to victims of Mustard Gas, though such symptoms are also commonly found in sufferers of hysteria, which can be brought on by exposure to a traumatic or shocking event. After examining the case, Joe Nickell of the paranormal investigation group CSICOP concluded that the bright light in the sky reported by the witnesses on September 12 was most likely a meteor, that the pulsating red light was likely an aircraft navigation/hazard beacon, and that the creature described by witnesses closely resembled an Owl. The latter two of which were distorted by the heightened state of anxiety felt by the witnesses after having observed the former. Nickell's conclusions are shared by a number of other investigators, including those of the Air Force. The Mothman has also been explained by this. The night of the September 12 sighting, a meteor had been observed across three states, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and had been mistakenly reported as flaming aircraft crashing into the side of a hill at Elk River, approximately 11 miles southwest of the location of the Flatwoods sighting. Three flashing red aircraft beacons were also visible from the area of the sightings, possibly accounting for the pulsating red light seen by the witnesses, and for the red tint on the face of the creature. The shape, movement, and sounds reported by witnesses was also consistent with the silhouette, flight pattern, and call of a startled Barn Owl perched on a tree limb; leading researchers to conclude that foliage beneath the owl may have created the illusion of the lower portions of the creature (described as being a pleated green skirt). Researchers also concluded that the witnesses' inability to agree on whether the creature had arms, combined with Kathleen May's report of it having "small, claw-like hands" which "extended in front of it" also matched the description of a barn owl with its talons gripping a tree branch. However, some have asked that if it was an owl then why did the witnesses not see it as such, even after shining a searchlight right at it. Many investigators have countered that this and the creature's supposed 'gliding' can be ascribed to hysteria and the heightened state of tension amongst the witnesses causing them to be panicky and irrational. Alternative explanations included those put forward by the local media; that the September 12 group had witnessed the impact of a meteor which resulted in a man-shaped cloud of vapor, and those of Kathleen May and her sons (recorded some time after the incident); that they had seen some kind of covert government aircraft ñññññññññññññññññ Japan Air Lines flight 1628 incident. ........Compiled by Joe Stanton. Japan Air Lines flight 1628 was a UFO incident that occurred on November 17, 1986 involving a Japanese cargo jumbo freighter aircraft. The aircraft was en route from Paris to Narita, Tokyo[1] with a cargo of Beaujolais wine.[2] On the Reykjavík to Anchorage section of the flight, at 5:11 PM over eastern Alaska, the crew first witnessed two unidentified objects to their left. These abruptly rose from below and closed in to escort their aircraft. Each had two rectangular arrays of what appeared to be glowing nozzles or thrusters, though their bodies remained obscured by darkness. When closest, the aircraft's cabin was lit up and the captain could feel their heat in his face. These two craft departed before a third, much larger disk-shaped object started trailing them, causing the pilots to request a change of course.[3] Anchorage Air Traffic Control obliged and requested an oncoming United Airlines flight to confirm the unidentified traffic, but when it and a military craft sighted JAL 1628 at about 5:51 PM, no other craft could be distinguished.[3] The sighting of 50 minutes[4] ended in the vicinity of Mt. McKinley.[5][6] Eielson AFB Locations of the Flight 1628 and subsequent incidents The first stage of the sighting occurred from point A to B, where two objects were observed.[7] Two and a half months later, Flight AS-53 recorded an unidentified object near McGrath, and a military plane observed an object between Elmendorf and Eielson air force bases. On November 17, 1986, the Japanese crew of a JAL Boeing 747 cargo freighter witnessed three unidentified objects after sunset, while flying over eastern Alaska, USA. The objects seemed to prefer the cover of darkness to their left, and to avoid the brighter skies to their right.[8] At least the first two of the objects were observed by all three crew members: Captain Kenju Terauchi, an ex-fighter pilot with more than 10,000 hours flight experience,[1] in the cockpit's left-hand seat; co-pilot Takanori Tamefuji in the right-hand seat; and flight engineer Yoshio Tsukuba. The routine cargo flight entered Alaska on auto-pilot, cruising at 565 mph (909 km/h) at an altitude of 35,000 ft (11,000 m).[5] At 5:09 PM, the Anchorage ATC advised a new heading towards Talkeetna, Alaska. As soon as JAL 1628 straightened out of its turn, at 17:11 PM, Captain Terauchi noticed two craft to his far left, and some 2,000 ft (610 m) below his altitude, which he assumed to be military aircraft. These were pacing his flight path and speed.[8] At 5:18 or 5:19 PM the two objects abruptly veered to a position about 500 ft (150 m) or 1,000 ft (300 m) in front of the aircraft, assuming a stacked configuration. In doing so they activated "a kind of reverse thrust, and [their] lights became dazzlingly bright".[1] To match the speed of the aircraft from their sideways approach, the objects displayed what Terauchi described as a disregard for inertia: "The thing was flying as if there was no such thing as gravity. It sped up, then stopped, then flew at our speed, in our direction, so that to us it [appeared to be] standing still. The next instant it changed course. ... In other words, the flying object had overcome gravity."[1] The "reverse thrust" caused a bright flare for 3 to 7 seconds,[8] to the extent that captain Terauchi could feel the warmth of their glows. Air traffic control was notified at this point (i.e. 5:19:15 PM), who could not confirm any traffic in the indicated position. After 3 to 5 minutes the objects assumed a side-to-side configuration, which they maintained for another 10 minutes. They accompanied the aircraft with an undulating motion, and some back and forth rotation of the jet nozzles, which seemed to be under automatic control,[8] causing them to flare with brighter or duller luminosity. Each object had a square shape, consisting of two rectangular arrays of what appeared to be glowing nozzles or thrusters, separated by a dark central section. Captain Terauchi speculated in his drawings, that the objects would appear cylindrical[5] if viewed from another angle, and that the observed movement of the nozzles could be ascribed to the cylinders' rotation. The objects left abruptly at about 5:23:13 PM, moving to a point below the horizon to the east.[8] Mothership Where the first objects disappeared, Captain Terauchi now noticed a pale band of light that mirrored their altitude, speed and direction.[3] Setting their onboard radar scope to a 25 nautical miles (46 km) range, he confirmed an object in the expected 10 o'clock direction at about 7.5 nmi (13.9 km) distance,[4] and informed ATC of its presence. Anchorage found nothing on their radar, but Elmendorf ROCC, directly in his flight path, reported a "surge primary return" after some minutes.[3] As the city lights of Fairbanks began to illuminate the object, captain Terauchi believed to perceive the outline of a gigantic spaceship on his port side that was "twice the size of an aircraft carrier". It was however outside first officer Tamefuji's field of view.[11] Terauchi immediately requested a change of course to avoid it.[4] The object however followed him "in formation", or in the same relative position throughout the 45 degree turn, a descent from 35,000 to 31,000 ft, and a 360 degree turn.[12] The short-range radar at Fairbanks airport however failed to register the object.[3] Anchorage ATC offered military intervention, which was declined by the pilot, due to his knowledge of the Mantell incident.[4] The object was not noted by any of two planes which approached JAL 1628 to confirm its presence, by which time JAL 1628 had also lost sight of it. JAL 1628 arrived safely in Anchorage at 18:20. Aftermath Captain Terauchi cited in the official FAA report that the object was a UFO. In December 1986, Terauchi gave an interview to two Kyodo News journalists. JAL soon grounded him for talking to the press, and moved him to a desk job. He was only reinstated as a pilot years afterwards, and retired eventually in north Kanto, Japan.[1] Kyodo News contacted Paul Steucke, the FAA public information officer in Anchorage on December 24, and received confirmation of the incident, followed by UPI on the 29th.[12][13] The FAA's Alaskan Region consulted John Callahan,[note 4] the FAA Division Chief of the Accidents and Investigations branch, as they wanted to know what to tell the media about the UFO.[14] John Calahan was unaware of any such incident, considering it a likely early flight of a stealth bomber, then in development. He asked the Alaskan Region to forward the relevant data to their technical center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he and his superior played back the radar data and tied it in with the voice tapes by videotaping the concurrent playbacks.[14] A day later at FAA headquarters they briefed Vice Admiral Donald D. Engen, who watched the whole video of over half an hour, and asked them not to talk to anybody until they were given the OK, and to prepare an encompassing presentation of the data for a group of government officials the next day.[15] The meeting was attended by representatives of the FBI, CIA and President Reagan’s Scientific Study Team, among others. Upon completion of the presentation, all present were told that the incident was secret and that their meeting "never took place". According to Callahan, the officials considered the data to represent the first instance of recorded radar data on a UFO, and they took possession of all the presented data.[14] John Callahan however managed to retain the original video, the pilot's report and the FAA's first report in his office.[15] The forgotten target print-outs of the computer data were also rediscovered, from which all targets can be reproduced that were in the sky at the time.[14] After a three month investigation, the FAA formally released their results at a press conference held on March 5, 1987. Here Paul Steucke retracted earlier FAA suggestions that their controllers confirmed a UFO,[12] and ascribed it to a "split radar image" which appeared with unfortunate timing. He clarified that "the FAA [did] not have enough material to confirm that something was there", and though they were "accepting the descriptions by the crew" they were "unable to support what they saw".[11] The McGrath incident was revealed here amongst the ample set of documents supplied to the journalists. The sighting received special attention from the media,[16] as a supposed instance of the tracking of UFOs on both ground[12] and airborne radar, while being observed by experienced airline pilots, with subsequent confirmation by an FAA Division Chief. Subsequent Alaskan sightings Flight AS-53 UFO On 29 January 1987[11][note 5] at 18:40 PM,[17] Alaska Airlines Flight 53 observed a fast moving object on their onboard weather radar. While at 35,000 ft (11,000 m), some 60 miles (97 km) west of McGrath, on a flight from Nome to Anchorage, the radar registered a strong target in their 12 o'clock position, at 25 miles (40 km) range. While they could not distinguish any object or light visually, they noticed that the radar object was increasing its distance at a very high rate. With every sweep of their radar, about 1 second apart, the object added five miles to its distance, translating to a speed of 18,000 mph (29,000 km/h).[17][18] The pilot however relayed a speed of 'a mile a second' to the control tower, or a speed of 3,600 mph (5,800 km/h),[19] but confirmed that the target exceeded both the 50 mi (80 km) and 100 mi (160 km) ranges of their radar scope in a matter of seconds.[17][18] The object was outside the radar range of the Anchorage ARTCC,[17] and additional radar data covering the specified time and location failed to substantiate the pilots' claim.[18] KC-135 observation A US Air Force KC-135 jet flying from Anchorage to Fairbanks once again observed a very large, disk-shaped object on January 30, 1987. The pilot reported that the object was 12 m (40 ft) from the aircraft. On March 2, 1959, he awoke in Cedar City Hospital, and was completely unaware of how he got there. Irwin had been unconscious for twenty-three hours, and during that time was mumbling something about a "jacket on the bush." As he regained consciousness, the first thing he said was "Were there any survivors?" The strange tale of Gerry Irwin came to my attention from the notes of James Lorenzen, who is the esteemed director of the APRO group. The facts will leave one puzzled, and if there was any type of investigation by the Armed Forces, those details remain hidden to this day. Irwin's story began on February 28, 1959, as he was driving from Nampa, Idaho back to Fort Bliss, in El Paso, Texas, where he was a Nike missile technician. Returning from a leave of absence, he reached Cedar City, Utah, and turned southeast on Route 14 when he saw an unusual sight. The landscape was brilliantly lit as he observed a glowing object, which crossed the sky from right to left in front of him. Startled, he left his car to get a better view, and watched the strange craft continue until it was blocked from his sight by a ridge. His first thoughts were that a large airplane was making a forced landing. Wanting to render aid if possible, Irwin quickly wrote a note, left it on his car, and headed in the direction of the supposed crash. The note said, "HAVE GONE TO INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE PLANE CRASH. PLEASE CALL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS." He attached the note to his steering wheel, and using shoe polish, wrote STOP on the side of his car. About 30 minutes later, a Fish and Game Inspector stopped at the sight of Irwin's note. He immediately took the note to the Cedar City Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Otto Pfief quickly organized a search party, and headed for the sight. Approximately an hour later, Irwin was found unconscious in the area, with no sign of a plane crash. Upon arriving at the hospital, he was examined by Dr. Broadbent, who found that although Irwin's temperature and respiration were normal, he could not be awakened. Broadbent's initial diagnosis was "hysteria." When the frightened Irwin did come to, he felt fine, but was still puzzled by the strange object he had seen. He also was at a loss as to where his jacket was, it not being on him when found by searchers. Irwin was flown back to Ft. Bliss, and put under observation at William Beaumont Hospital for four days. He returned to duty afterward, though his security clearance was withdrawn. A couple of days later, while walking at the base, he fainted. He recovered almost immediately, however. On March 15, he fainted again on an El Paso street, and was taken to Southwest General Hospital. His condition at this time was very similar to his state at Cedar City. Irwin awoke at 2:00 A.M. on Monday, and asked, "Were there any survivors?" He thought that it was February 28 again, and was shocked to be told it was some two weeks later. He was again taken to William Beaumont Hospital, and placed under observation in the psychiatric ward. After a month's stay, he was released, and deemed "normal" by Captain Valentine. The very next day, seemingly without provocation, the Private left the fort without leave, caught a bus in El Paso, and arrived in Cedar City on Sunday afternoon, April 19. Returning to the scene of his strange encounter, he headed straight to an area where he found his missing jacket. There was a pencil in a buttonhole with a piece of paper tightly wrapped around it. He took the paper and burned it, and seemingly came out of his trance. Irwin had trouble finding his way back to his car, and turned himself in to Sheriff Pfief, who refreshed his memory of his first incident. Jim and Coral Lorenzen, hearing of the strange case, contacted Irwin after he returned to Fort Bliss. He underwent another psychiatric examination, with the same results as the first. His case was reviewed by the Inspector General, who ordered a more complete examination. On July 10, Irwin again entered Beaumont Hospital. After being released, he did not report for duty on August 1. A month later, he was listed as AWOL.
